Sugar Rush: Beignets with Praline Sauce at Huey's in Savannah, GA
Feeling bad about eating pillowy squares of warm, deep-fried dough coated with a thick layer of powdered sugar for breakfast is easy to do—except when you're on vacation, when it feels soright. If you've got more restraint than I do, and can stave off the sugar rush until after lunch, you're still in luck: at Huey's, a you can score an order of three beignets for $3.95, or a dozen for $9.95, any time of day.
While you're at it, get a side of warm praline sauce full of toasty pecan pieces to drizzle, dunk, or just pour right into the middle of the beignets. They're hollow, so they're suited perfectly suited for it. The sauce may not be traditional, but that's not the point. In Savannah, pecan desserts are a must.
Beignets are available to go, and while walking along River Street with a container of hot, fresh beignets is a good way to feel like you're strolling through the French Quarter in New Orleans, I'd argue for eating in, if only to avoid a powdered sugar dusting.
